What it does, chapter by chapter.

01

Capture a meal.

Multi-photo · Barcode · Note · Voice · Siri · Text · Manual

Take or import up to 10 food photos for one combined analysis, add an optional note, share a food photo into Fud AI on iOS, scan a packaged-food barcode, speak your lunch hands-free, use Siri Shortcuts on iOS, type it, or enter macros manually when you already know them.

  • Camera and Photos keep up to 10 images separate in one request, with a horizontal preview and optional meal note
  • Failed photo analysis keeps Retry and Cancel available so you do not have to rebuild the selection
  • iOS Share Extension opens shared food photos directly in the app's review flow
  • Barcode lookup on iOS and Android uses Open Food Facts when public packaged-food data is available
  • Voice input via 6 speech-to-text options with per-provider language selection
  • iOS Siri Shortcuts can log food, read today's calories, and log weight; phrase examples live in Settings
  • Smart serving units show slices, pieces, cups, ml, or similar units when the AI can infer them
  • Nutrition lock in Review Food lets you correct calories, macros, and detailed nutrients before logging
  • What if? in Review Food previews daily macro impact and can ask AI for a practical suggestion before logging
  • Text and manual fallbacks for quick logging
02

AI does the math.

13 LLM providers

Bring your own key and choose from current vision presets including Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and 3.6 Flash, GPT-5.4 Mini, Claude Sonnet 5, Grok 4.3, or models through OpenRouter, Together AI, Groq, Hugging Face, Fireworks, DeepInfra, Mistral, Ollama (local), and custom OpenAI-compatible endpoints. On supported iPhones, Apple Intelligence can handle eligible food descriptions on-device as the final fallback. Android Coach also supports camera or photo-library attachments.

  • Open-weight vision models out of the box: Gemma, Qwen VL, Llama Vision, and other current provider presets
  • OpenRouter testable on $0 credits — the openrouter/free default routes to a free vision model so you can try the integration without funding the account
  • Custom AI Instructions — optional Settings text appended to every AI request. Drop your region, diet, or brand context once instead of repeating it per meal ("I live in Germany, prefer ALDI/REWE brands" or "I'm on a bodybuilding cut")
  • Fallback Provider — opt-in second provider that auto-retries when your primary fails on overload, rate limit, or network error. Pair a paid model with a free fallback for cheap reliability
  • Apple Intelligence final fallback — supported iPhones can process text, voice-transcribed, and Siri food descriptions on-device only after BYOK provider/fallback attempts fail
  • Fully free — no subscription, no ads; an optional iOS Tip Jar helps keep the project going
  • API keys stored in iOS Keychain (iOS) or EncryptedSharedPreferences with AES-256 (Android) — never transmitted to us
  • Switch providers and models anytime; transient overloads (503 / 429 / 529) auto-retry with backoff, and AI responses with surrounding prose or markdown fences are parsed reliably
03

Track expanded nutrients.

Macros + micros

Calories, protein, carbs, fat, sugar, fiber, saturated fat, trans fat, mono-unsaturated fat, poly-unsaturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, vitamins A/C/D/E/K/B12, folate, omega-3, and more when available — adjustable serving sizes and AI-suggested units recalculate every logged entry live, with decimal nutrition totals preserved where the source data is decimal.

  • Personalized BMR + TDEE via Katch-McArdle / Mifflin-St Jeor
  • Auto daily targets, fully overridable, with per-macro pin / auto-balance
  • Six activity levels use work and training descriptions rather than step-count requirements
  • Activity Level shows protein g/kg by body weight, or an equivalent lean-mass multiplier when body fat is set
  • Expanded optional nutrient goals stay separate from calorie/protein/carbs/fat math
  • Adaptive Goals can apply a small weekly weight-trend correction
  • Home cards can show macros or selected detailed nutrients
  • Weight and body-fat ranges show average and net change summaries
  • Browse past days with the date strip; configure week start, Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner/Snack boundaries, and optional latest-first food log sorting
  • Optional water tracking stays off until enabled, then supports any practical goal, glass shortcuts, custom amounts, local reminders, and progress below calories
  • Optional fasting tracking stays off until enabled, then adds a persistent timer, a 1–168 hour goal, editable history, and an optional local goal alert without changing nutrition totals
04

Talk to your Coach.

Multi-turn AI chat

A dedicated tab where the AI can retrieve your profile, weight history, food log, workout history, explicitly logged fasting sessions, current date/timezone, and a thermodynamic forecast. Ask "what's my expected weight in 30 days?" or "how did my completed fasts line up with training?" and get answers grounded in your own data. Coach never infers a fast from a missing meal log.

  • Memory persists locally across sessions
  • Goal-aware prompt chips for Lose / Gain / Maintain
  • Long-press any reply to copy
05

Glance from anywhere.

Nutrition + Water · Home + Lock + Watch

iOS has Fud AI in small, medium, and large sizes, a small Protein widget, and separate Lock Screen formats. Optional water tracking adds a distinct Water widget for Home or Lock Screen without changing the nutrition widgets. Apple Watch and complications show calories and macros. Android offers separate Calorie, Protein, Today, and Water Glance widgets. Each reads a small local snapshot and refreshes after relevant logs.

  • Pink-gradient calorie ring with selected nutrient or macro progress at a glance
  • Circular, rectangular, and inline formats on iOS Lock Screen, including Water when enabled
  • Auto-roll over at midnight without opening the app
06

Sync with Apple Health & Health Connect.

Bidirectional · iOS + Android

iOS writes meal nutrition, body measurements, and calculated workout calories to Apple Health, and reads authorized metrics back. Android syncs nutrition, weight, body fat, and calculated workout calories through Health Connect. Both can optionally use active/total energy for Energy Burn Goals. Fasting sessions remain local and are not synced. Integration is permission-controlled and optional.

  • Background observers for real-time bi-sync
  • Energy-burn goal estimates keep protein, carbs, and fat editable
  • Calculated workout burns sync as active-energy summaries; workout plans and individual sets stay in Fud AI
  • UUID-tagged samples for safe per-entry deletion (no orphans)
  • Delete All Data is local-only — Apple Health / Health Connect data is never touched
  • Manage Access opens the platform permission controls so you can review or revoke health permissions
07

Speaks up to sixteen languages.

Auto-localized

iOS supports English, Arabic, Azerbaijani, Chinese (Simplified), Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Romanian, Russian, and Spanish. Android supports the same set except Polish. The app auto-selects by your phone's system language, and voice input can also be guided separately per STT provider. The in-app UI is fully localized in each supported language, including Polish on iOS.

08

Make it yours.

Theme colors + matching icons

Choose Fud Pink, red, orange, green, mint, teal, blue, or purple in Settings. The accent color updates across tabs, buttons, rings, charts, and the iOS app icon / Android launcher icon.

§ 03   Process

From photo to log in seconds.

Step 01

Capture

Take or import up to 10 photos, add an optional note, share from another iOS app, scan a barcode, type, speak your food details, or use Siri Shortcuts on iOS.

Step 02

Analyze

Your chosen AI provider identifies the food and estimates the full nutrition profile.

Step 03

Review

Edit the name, unlock Nutrition if calories or nutrients need correction, adjust grams or a visible unit like slices/pieces/ml, preview What if? impact, then confirm meal type. You stay in control of every entry.

Step 04

Log

Saved locally on your device. Nutrition, body metrics, and calculated workout burns sync to Apple Health or Health Connect only if enabled; fasting stays local and separate. Widgets and Apple Watch snapshots update from local data.

Step 05

Track

Dashboard, decimal nutrition totals, progress summaries, charts, and Coach context update in real time across the app.

§ 05   FAQ

Fud AI app, plainly answered.

What is Fud AI?

A free, open-source AI calorie tracker for iPhone and Android. Snap a photo, scan a barcode, speak, or type a meal — AI estimates the calories, macros, and nutrients. fud-ai.app is the official website.

Is Fud AI free?

Yes — fully free, no subscription. It's free with no ads, plus an optional Tip Jar on iOS. AI analysis uses your own free provider key.

Is there a Fud AI APK for Android?

Fud AI for Android is installed from Google Play — no separate APK download is needed. It's MIT-licensed open source, so you can also build it yourself from the GitHub repository.

Is Fud AI the Fud app?

Yes. Fud AI, Fud AI app, Fud app, and AI Fud all point to the same open-source calorie tracker for iPhone and Android.

Can it work as an AI food scanner?

Yes. Analyze up to 10 camera or photo-library images together with an optional note, use an iOS Share Extension photo, scan a barcode, speak, use Siri Shortcuts on iOS, type, reuse a saved meal, or enter nutrition manually.

Does it replace a macro tracker?

It tracks calories, protein, carbs, and fat, plus detailed nutrients like fiber, sugar, fats, cholesterol, sodium, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, vitamins, folate, and omega-3 when available.

Can I use it without an API key?

Fud AI is bring-your-own-key — a free Gemini API key takes a minute to create. Manual entry, barcode lookup, Native iOS / Native Android speech, and Ollama local inference work without any hosted AI API key.

Does it sync with Health apps?

Yes, only when you enable it. Fud AI supports Apple Health on iPhone and Health Connect on Android for authorized body measurements, meal nutrition, and calculated workout calories. Energy Burn Goals can use active/total energy for optional calorie-goal estimates. Fasting history remains local and is not synced.

How does fasting tracking work?

It is off by default. Enable Fasting Tracking in Settings, choose a 1–168 hour goal, then start, end, or cancel from Home → +. The timer survives app restarts, completed sessions are editable, and an optional local alert can fire at your goal. Fasting never changes calories or macros.

Can I log food with Siri on iPhone?

Yes. Siri Shortcuts can log food, read today's calories, and log weight. On supported iPhones, Siri food-description analysis can use Apple Intelligence on-device as the final fallback after BYOK provider/fallback attempts fail. Phrase examples are under + → Describe Meal → Siri Phrases.

Is it private and open source?

Yes. There is no Fud AI account, Fud AI-operated cloud sync, in-app analytics, or behavioral tracking. Platform backup/device-transfer settings may still apply. It's free with no ads (plus an optional Tip Jar on iOS), and the MIT-licensed source is on GitHub.
